About The Jeweler

Our Personal Narrative

Founded by Randall and Debbie Hurt and their daughter, Brandy, in Hannibal, Missouri, AVA Goldworks is a small family business that specializes in goldsmithing. Having operated a physical store for more than 15 years, the decision was taken to close the store at the end of 2019 in order to devote more time to the production of their handcrafted jewelry. Online shopping is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The retail location is only open on occasion during the year, such as during festivals or other events conducted in downtown Hannibal; thus, please keep an eye on Facebook, Instagram, or by sending an email to avagoldworks@sbcglobal.net for updates on prospective openings.

Randall and Debbie's journey to where they are today began more than 45 years ago, when they were newlyweds in a little town in Pennsylvania. Randall began working as a jeweler's apprentice in a bustling trade store in 1973. He put forth the effort to understand everything he could about the jewelry-making process. At home, he would frequently practice french putting stones in nickels while sitting at the dinner table with his family. He was resolved to learn the skill of jewelry making and become a great craftsman.

After six years of apprenticing, the family traveled throughout the nation while Randall worked as a bench jeweler for a number of different jewelry stores throughout the country. At each location, he continued to acquire new talents and approaches that he could use. In 2000, after 27 years of hard work and dedication to his craft, he passed the demanding test to become a Certified Master Bench Jeweler with the Jewelers of America. Certified Master Bench Jeweler is the most difficult of the four levels of certification available, and there are now only 137 persons in the country who have achieved this level of achievement.

After 30 years of Randall's involvement in the jewelry industry, the family made the decision to build their own store in their hometown, with the goal of creating and providing high-quality jewelry. The store was a rarity in today's industry, since they were the ones who really made the products they sold. They made the decision to close their real and mortar business in December of this year, after 15 years. They will now be able to devote all of their time to designing jewelry for their website.

Brandy has developed into a successful jewelry designer, having won her first prize for jewelry design in 2005, when she was just 19 years old. Since then, Brandy & Randall have gone on to win more than 40 honors for their jewelry design. Following a gradual expansion of their business, which first focused on gold, platinum, and palladium jewelry, they expanded their offerings to include Sterling Silver AVA Originals. Brandy designs and makes the majority of the sterling silver jewelry, bringing her years of experience in the jewelry industry to a new medium. The silver jewelry incorporates whimsical motifs and vibrant gemstone combinations to create a unique look. Customers may now purchase a one-of-a-kind item, regardless of their budget.

The company has also been an accredited member of the Better Business Bureau since November 2005, earning an A+ rating, and a member of the Jewelers of America since January 2005, earning an A+ rating. Additionally, AVA Goldworks is a juried member of the Best of Missouri Hands competition.
